about

Simple Gifts/Shaker March #59/Come Life Shaker Life/Funeral Hymn
The set begins with a familiar tune about the gifts of simplicity and humility, and how they bring freedom, delight, and love. Many Shaker songs wee gifts received from saints, angels, or the spirits of the dead, given to individuals in fits of ecstasy. Though sung without instrumental accompaniment, their reception was often accompanied by visions of heavenly musical instruments, harps and dulcimers among them. Come Life Shaker Life is another dance tune to be accompanied by shaking movements: “Shake, shake out of me/ all that is carnal.” As a partner song to it, the flute plays another, a Funeral Hymn counseling preparation for death: all must die, but for the righteous, death is freedom.
